Summer Winery Feature

Summer Winery Feature: Pazo Señorans, Rias Baixas, Galicia

Albariño in a league all its own. Founders Marisol Bueno and Javier Mareque are pioneers in the region, a driving force in establishing the Rias Baixas DO in the early 1980s. Trained on a Pergola system where the vines climb upwards of 2 meters before the shoots produce the leaves and fruit. The wines are produced from grapes grown on their own 29 ha of vineyard and a collaboration of 160 local farmers, each being inspected rigorously and samples regularly taken from each parcel for quality control. Daughter Vicky Mareque Bueno has taken the reigns on the winery and continues the family tradition in the modern market. After a recent visit, Chef Alfie fell in love with the story, the vineyards and the full range and it’s an absolute delight to share them with you at River House!

Albariño ‘Joven’, 2024
The ‘young’ wine from the Señorans range, this is the firm yet elegant handshake to the wines Vicky and the Mareque family produce. Ready to enjoy upon release from the winery, the Joven can easily age 5 to 8 years and develop complexity. This wine, the current vintage, shows youthful aromas of nectarine, orange zest and white flowers. Dry, citrus flavours and a mineral-driven finish.
175ml £12.50 | 250ml £17.00 | Bottle £50.00

Albariño Colección, 2021
The very same wine as the ‘Joven’, but each year Vicky takes a parcel of the wines to age in the cellar for an additional 2.5 years to further develop honeyed notes and ripe fig aroma, while still showing the bright zesty acidity. This is an opportunity to enjoy from the family’s ‘collection’, and the ageing potential is upwards of 10 years. The fierce minerality holds true on the palate and opens with familiar citrus and peach notes, and undeniable coastal salty influence
175ml £16.75 | 250ml £22.75 | Bottle £67.00

Albariño Tras Los Muros, 2019
A true family affair! A collaboration with Vicky’s sister in-law Berta Garcia, a Spanish winemaker. After studying oenology in Tarragona University she worked on wineries Chateau Haut-Brion in Bordeaux and Maison Louis Latour in Burgundy. Sshe returned and started producing Tras los Muros for Pazo Señorans in 2017; a unique production in that the wine underwent oak fermentation, then aged on its lees for six months in French oak using different barrel volumes, producers and ageing time of the barrels. Lees stirring is practiced during this time. For the 2019 vintage a six months additional period of ageing has been done in stainless-steel. Rich and textured, with developed complexity and power.
Bottle £95.00

Albariño Selección de Añada, 2015
This single vineyard wine comes from 4 ha vineyard, from vines that are over 45 years old planted around the Los Bancales sub-region. The Seleccion Añada is unique for an Albariño in that it is aged on its lees in small steel tanks for up to 36 months. This demonstrates above all the ageing potential of Albariño, and Señorans in particular, that we think no other producer can mimic. This is the current release…nearly eight years ageing at the winery waiting to be enjoyed!
Bottle £110.00

Albariño ‘Joven’, 2023
The best way to share a feast…with magnum bottles! The perfect size to age wines, the Joven can easily age ten years in this format. The same youthful expression as the 2024, and easily enjoyed with starters through mains.
